I just bought a 98 Maxima for my daughter in Florida, 86,000 miles. On driving the car home from Florida we noticed the car is showing the car is going faster. Example, at 80 Miles per hour the maxima is showing 2700 RPM and the speedo is showing 95-100 MPH. Wha do you think is wrong and how to fix?

Does your car have the stock or same circumference wheels/tire combination??

If so, it could be your transmission speed sensor, but not 100% sure on that

I would agree with the above post, as far as things to check first.

I am local to you, and wouldn't mind helping you if needed. I don't normally drive 80mph, but I can tell you that I turn right around 2500rpms @ 70mph (97 Maxima, automatic trans). So, it doesn't sound like you are off much. Do you have an automatic, of 5 speed?

You could also have a faulty vehicle speed sensor. With your rpm range compared to the speedometer reading, I would lean in that direction to start.

The maxima has standard stock wheels and tires, 205-65-15 inch.

I'm leaning toward speed sensor.

Maxhopper, by you turning 2500 RPM at 70, the 2700 at 80 is about right. I guess I'll try a speed sensor, Any ideas on a local cheap price?

Thanks

I'm not really fond of any of the local dealers' prices. Try looking at one of NICO's dealer sponsors.

Got new speed sensor from NAPA around $29.00. Looks just like the orginal, installed this weekend and tested speedometer again at 70 and 80 MPH. Speedometer is still off around 10 - 15 MPH. Any other ideas on what to check next?

There's the chance that it's the gauge itself. I'll see what I can find for you.
