First post, been reading here alot since I bought my QX4 less than six months ago with just over 100k miles. Been loving it...

But last night was driving home from visiting a friend and the transmission died. I was able to limp it home in D going about 40 mph, but would get all sorts of horrible noises during most starts and and different speeds. I have no reverse and forward is probably nearly all shot as well.

I have taken good care of it, oil changes and kept an eye on transmission fluid. Has always been good level, color and smell. Why would this all of a sudden happen!?

Anyways looks like I will be on my bike for a while now. Was hoping you all could give me some advice on the repair. I live in a small town so only going to be general mechanics. Where should I look for a replacement and does anyone have cost estimations? I have no idea where to even start on this problem...

ThanksKevin

You shouldn't need to "replace" your transmission just get a rebuild.

Well that certainly sounds better. I just talked to my long time mechanic and he doesn't work on modern transmissions, but he recommended a shop about 60 miles away. Any advice for when I call them on Monday?

BTW What is the code for this transmission?

Also, flip open your owner's manual and look up the fail-safe mode for the transmission. I can't tell exactly from your description, but your transmission may just be in limp mode rather than completely torn apart.

Oh how I wish. Went and checked and not getting the sign for fail-safe mode. I think I can safely say it has failed.

Thanks for the idea!

I think you should just replace your transmission with a certified low mileage one. Its usually cheaper then a rebuild.

I'm dealing with a transmission problem right now and its coming to to be around $1450 cnd tax in for a used transmission with 165,000km installed, so no a low mileage used wont cost $2900, this is on a 2000 btw

I had an issue like that on my 98. I ordered a rebuilt trans off ebay for $800 shipped. It will probably be another $800 in labor if you take it to a shop, but I am going to install it myself.
