My pathfinder is having steering problems. When i make a turn in either direction it makes a grinding noise. The wheel will also stay in the direction i turn but it will go straight. I do not have much knowledge on steering components of vehichles my mechanic is not exactly sure what the problem is as i can grab the shaft and the wheels respond correctly so he doesnt think its the gearbox. Any input will be appreciated thanks

Hmmmmmm..... You may want to read the stickied thread near the top of the page titled "1996-2004 Pathfinder / QX4 Strut Housing Corrosion Recall". Have you had the recall performed? In some cases, the inner fender well starts to collapse inward and rubs on the steering gear. If that is your problem, Nissan buys the car back - it is too expensive to repair economically in most cases.

Otherwise, there is a steering gear assembly down at the bottom of the steering shaft which is essentially a fancy u-joint. It connects up to the steering rack. It may be going bad.
