1998 Nissan Pathfinder - Drivers Power Window Regulator Removal and Refit

I live in Doha, Qatar and my wife drives a 98 model Pathfinder (US spec I believe). Recently the drivers' side power window stopped working. I had a go at removing it but could not get the long regulator guide out. I sprayed it all with WD 40 and contact cleaner from the top and from anywhere I could reach and after a while it started to work. When the car had been left for a few days again it stopped working so I am back at square one. When I depress the switch I hear it click like it is trying to work and the dashboard lights dim but it doesn't move. Any suggestions on the problem, how to remove it and whether you think I need to replace it.
