I have a 1998 Nissan Maxima that is reporting the following diagnostic codes: 34, 75 and 39. I obtained these codes by turning the screw on the 'computer' and then observing the flashing of the service engine light. Does anyone know what these codes mean? I know I have a bad passenger air bar sensor and possibly a bad knock sensor. Can someone confirm what these codes mean....Also I have been told that this model has 4 O2 sensors. If there is a bad O2 sensor, how do I tell how many and which ones are bad? Does anyone have the definitions of all the diagnostic codes for this model. If one of these codes is for the knock sensor, does it mean that I have to replace this sensor or could something else be triggering the knock sensor?

0304 - Knock Sensor (Replace the Knock Sensor, located under the intake manifolds in the center of the V of the motor)

0705 - Evap Control System

0309 - Generic Code for a Small Evap Leak, usually followed by another code which is the 0705 Code you got.

I am getting the 0309/0705 but I don't feel like replacing the evap canister and control valve.. It cost about $200 and It doesn't really affect driveability in anyway. You can try pulling down the canister from the driver rear side, removing the Control Valve and cleaning it.. I tried this but a week later the code returned.

Yes, you would have to replace the knock sensor.. unless you like decreased performance/MPG/etc

If you had a bad 02 Sensor, the car would throw a CEL for it.. If not go to a Autozone and have them put it on a OBDII Scanner to get some further knowledge on it...

but yeah Heres a website that you can put in the diagnostic codes the 98 Maxima ECU gives you.. If not buy a Chilton/Hayne's Manual

Thanks for your response...What is the EVAP Control System? Could I also have a bad O2 sensor that has triggered the knock sensor? Also, my air bag light is flashing and the dealer told me that my passenger side, side air bar was faulty. Shouldn't there be a code associated with the air bag issue?

well I will let a fellow more experienced person talk to you about your airbag issues..I would assume there is a code for it

I am almost 100% sure that the 02 Sensors would throw a code, I was under the interpertation from other users here the knock sensor is a "phantom code" If you really are leaning towards faulty 02 Sensors and there isn't a CEL for them on the ECU, use a OBDII Scanner or hit up a automotive shop that can scan the car for you.

Evap Canister ^^^^^^

Evap Control Valve this is what is attached to the canister^^^You can add battery power to the two terminals on the control valve and look inside the hole where you can see the little flap. I think It needs to be closed when power is applied and open when no power is there to be working.

The evap system is part of your emissions system.. It manages gas vapors and keeps them under control. It also has a few other little details, but thats mainly what my mechanic told me it does.

It's located on the driver side rear, beside the tire. It is a black box with some hoses running off it.. disconnect these hoses and the electrical connector.. remove the canister from the car, the Control Valve will be attached to the canister by two bolts, work It out of the canister and shoot some brake cleaner through one hole of the control valve, so It runs out the other... hose it out real good and then put some lubricant through it, reassemble and put back on the car.. finally reset the ECU and see If it comes back. You could also examine the canister check for any leaks, or signs of damage.

Unfortunately, I tried cleaning out my control valve.. but the code came back a week later.

Also, If I understood everything correctly then I think the 1998 has the Federal Emissions and theres only two O2 Sensors.. but only the Cali Specs there are four 02 sensors.
