Hi Labella,

So, you have your foot on the brake, you've inserted the key, turned the car on, and you can't get the transmission to shift out of park?

One possibility might be Shift Lock.. it should be overridden and disengage when you turn the car on and have your foot on the brake.. but it might be malfunctioning.

near the shifter you should see a little switch of some type. (forgive me as I'm not familiar with altima's). It could be a little red tab on the back of the shifter... or it could be a space on the flat area near the shifter.. Look in your owner's manual under shift lock. If you press the botton, you should override the shift lock.

You may also want to check your shift lock control fuses... that could be the cause of the issue in the first place. The owner's manual should also have a diagram of the fuses. The box should be on teh side of the dash... accesable when you open the driver door.

Take a look and report back.. We'll get to the bottom of this..

Hi Eikon,

I have a 2001 I30 and similar problem as this thread ( shift locks, won't go from P to D on start ).

I could not find the "shift lock control fuses" you've referred to (in thread below). Its not in the two fuse blocks - under steering and under hood.

Strangely, on some rare instances, the shift unlocks properly ( moves from P to D on start ). This tells me that the shift lock solenoid is working fine. When I do have a problem, likely the solenoid does not get activated when I press brake.

Any guidance will be helpful.

Hitesh
