The engine light has been on in my QX4 for a while now. It happened right after I filled up one day (It happens sometimes I have heard) so I expected to go out sometimes shortly after but that hasn't happened. It did go out for a day but came back on that evening. The truck runs fine. Any ideas?

I've heard of topping up causing EVAP-type codes, but it's impossible to know what's going on without knowing what code(s) are being thrown. You can get them read at any auto parts store for free (I've had good luck with O'Reilly/Kragen) or buy a cheap scanner to see for yourself. I personally have the Autel MaxiScan MS300:

The advantage of owning is you don't have to drop by the store every time you want a code read or cleared.

Let us know what you find!

Thanks I'll stop by and get a scanner tomorrow hopefully. It would be useful to have it. I'll let you know.

Is there any way to really get rid of the EVAP- style codes? They cause my light to be on too, and its very annoying.

Overfilling the gas tank can sometimes throw codes temporarily, and can expose the charcoal in the EVAP system to the gas, degrading it quicker and causing problems later on down the road.

You can clear codes with any code scanner, but if they come back (immediately or with regularity), you should be addressing them as they're a indications of problems.

If you need help figuring what a code means and how to fix it, just open a up a new thread! :dblthumb:

Mine came on once and I took it to Pep boys and they checked out and reset the code for free. Turns out, I didn't shut my gas cap all the way. Make sure you turn yours until it clicks. Try to find a place that will read your problem code for free. Here in Southern California, Pep Boys does it and so does Aamco I think it is or one of those places. Just google it.

Ill have my garage write down the codes next time its in for a service. They just said that they have to do with emissions which my area doesn't have to worry about. If the codes get reset they come back on after about 15 miles.

Ah, good to hear you pinned down the problem. I have my fingers crossed that it's a quick fix for you.
