I have no check engine light when key placed in on position. There used to be one but recently it has dissapeared. The car has 52000 miles.

1) Any thoughts how to determine if the check engine light dash bulb is bad or something else wrong . Car seems to run OK, no misses or power loss.

2) Can I still retreive codes? Is there is a flasher at the ECU that will indicate the codes since the dash check engine light is gone?.

3) Since emissions related if ECU a problem is this covered under the 96 month/80k mile long term Federal Emissions defect warranty?

Thanks in advance

1) Simply replace the bulb.2) You can get codes via the on-board diag connector and a code reader. The diag function of the ECU flashes codes to the CEL light. If the bulb is blown, you can't check it that way.3) Not sure. If it is simply a blown bulb, then the ECU is not a problem. If the vehicle is running OK, the ECU is fine.

the federal emissions warranty only covers certain things and what i have found on nissans is its just the ecm and the cat convertor. there is a dollar amount attached to that warranty and I believe that amout is any part over 700 dollars.not sure the amount may be higher but its at least that.

I would appreciate some instruction on replacing the bulb as to what has to be removed first, second, etc.

Is this a PITA to do since it is in the instrument cluster?

Thanks

nah its cake. remove the covers around the steering coloum. then remove the screws holding the instrument outter bezel, should be 2 going upward into the dash in front of the instrument glass, you may also need to remove the knee panel to gain access to the bottom screws of that bezel. then you slide the bezel out and you should see 4 screws around the instrument cluster. remove those and slide the cluster toward you. you can leave it pluggeg in or unplug all the connectors your choice as you should be able to gain access to the bulb with it slid forward. you need to figure out where it is in there. the way to do it is shine a flash light into the front of the cluster and see if you can make out where the "service enine soon" lettering is then go to the back and pull that bulb out so you can replace it.
