Hi all,

I dropped off my 98 maxima at a shop this morning for an engine/transmission swap. They are going to put in an engine/transmission combo out of a 2001 maxima. They told me last week that it was going to be a straight swap. Now this morning, another mechanic said that the swap cannot be completed, because the engines are different.

Is there anything I should be aware of for this swap (as in compatibility between the 2 model years)? Should the computer be swapped out too?

I was going to purchase a water pump, and belts for the newer motor so that it can be done while it out, is there anything else I can do to the newer motor before it goes in?

The 2001 engine transmission has 120,000Kms (75,000miles) on the odometer. Saw it myself before they pulled that motor out of it. The 1998 has 200,000Kms (122,000Miles) on it now.

Thanks

Heeter

The main difference is the intake manifold. You may be able to swap the manifold off your old engine onto the new one. There may be someother differences with sensors, but it is doable.

Great, Thanks, for the info.

I will let them know, that the intake might be the worst one.

The shop notified me that it is actually a 2003 donor car, not 2001 as I mentioned on original post. I can't edit original post, though.....

Thanks again,

Heeter

If it's a 2003 then that changes completely. The 02 and up engines are 3.5l instead of the 3.0l that you currently have.

These artlcles involve swapping a 3.5 into the 4th gen.

As for the new transmission, if it's a 6spd, here are instructions for swapping the 6spd into the 4th gen.

If it's an automatic, I have no idea what all would need to be done.

Go figure,

Wait two weeks for this, and it is the wrong engine totally. It is because of a slipping transmission, that I am doing this in the first place.

Oh well,

Thanks, will drive over there to see what is happening then.

Thanks a million, for your input.
