I'm trying to decide between a 1997 maxima se with 119,000 miles and a 2000 se with 110,000. I have not owned a maxima before so I don't know if one generation is better than another. I like the extra horsepower of the 2000 but don't know if it is less or more reliable than the previous generation. Any thoughts?

Aside from the different body, it has essentially the same motor with a different (vairable) intake which leads to the incresed hp #'s. In my opinion, it's basically a toss up between the two, as far as which body style you like better. The aftermarket support is about the same for both models. Now if you really want to fell a difference, go for a 2002 - 2003. The 3.5 offers a whole new realm of performance, while maintaining the 2000 - 2001 body styling.

finally decided on the 2000 SE. Now I was browsing Edmunds and saw the 2000 got the worst long-term ratings for mechanical of any of the years. Is it just because it's the first year of that gen. or is there something up with the 2000

I know that they had problems with the ingnition coils and MAFs. Other than that, I'm not aware of any significant mechanical issues.
