I have been quoted a price of sqillions of dollars to remove and repair the electronic fuel pump in my terrano. This is due to the sophisticated electronics involved in the fuel governor??? This discovered after a standard diagnostic check. Is this possible? Could I not replace the thing with a resurrected fuel pump?? Any advice would be much appreciated!

I know there's not many turbo diesel owners hanging around this forum, but I'll try to answer with my limited knowledge of diesels:

I think you're referring to the injection pump (IP). These are very expensive to replace across the board for any diesel engine (thousands of dollars.) I believe it involves pulling the whole engine out, taking off the old IP, installing new IP, then putting the engine back in.

The good news is that IPs typically come with a very long warranty - I've seen 12 year /120,000 mile warranties even on GM diesel IPs!

Yeah, we hate you overseas turbo diesel owners. Most of us aren't allowed to have them if we could even get our hands on them. Its just envy, so don't fret.

But, from what little I know about diesels as well, I do believe gwhunt is correct. A fuel pump would be cheap (relatively).
