Hi there,

I have a 1997 QX4 with approx. 200K on it. A few days ago the transmission did not shift properly. It seemed to start in second gear and the OD did not work. I stopped and restarted the truck. The OD light flashed a few times and the problem went away. At least for now. Any ideas what could cause this or what I should look out for? The fluid and filter was changed about 3 months ago.

200,000 miles is extremely good and long life for a Jatco transmission back in the old 4 speed days on a heavy vehicle.

Time to start thinking about where the $3,000 for its replacement will come from.

You might use a Consult II to look for any transmission codes stored?

Thanks for your reply. Just to clarify I have 200K (Canadian truck). Does that make much of a difference or should I still start saving for a rainy day. Is it best to put a rebuilt one in when it goes?

Thanks again.

There is no hard and fast mileage rule with Nissan transmissions as owner can destroy them in 80,000 miles miles or baby them into lasting 200,000 miles..................the average being around 150k.

In 10 years they have greatly improved reliability as I had an 88 Pathfinder which dropped at 80k and a 90 that last only 100k.

Heck 99 MB C43 AMG blew it's transmission at 103,000 miles.

For best reliability buy a Nissan Remanned Transmission vs a local shop because the Nissan units get a new TB, and rebuilt TC, and hard parts something the local guy has no easy access to nor do the locals have transmission dynos to qualify and test their work.

For many the Nissan reman can go another 80-120kMiles
