unfortunately i didn't buy my 1997 q45. it had 44000 miles and looked and ran sweet. the problem was when the mechanic put it on the lift he found rust on the underbody and exhaust. this is supposedly a fl. car and according to the mechanic should'nt have this rust. rust appears to be basically superficial with no spots rusted all the way through. is this normal on these cars? any suggestions. thanks

Depends where they are driven and the care they receive. Kudos for putting it on a lift.

What does the Infiniti dealer performed service history say?

The exhaust is no big deal since its uncoated/unprotected steel. The underbody is weird though. The car must have been close to the ocean but even minor surface rust is not a big deal as long as you stop it from rusting further. There are several products that convert rust to a paintable surface and they work well.

Rust is scary but almost no modern car will be destroyed by rust. I don't think you need to worry.

However, if you saw my boat trailor you'd be terrified, one frame rail was about to break in half!

evidently the mechanic didn't know the car as well as he thought. he said the exhaust was stainless steel. i guess he was wrong. any info on those rust inhibiting chemicals and brand names would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Exhaust is stainless steel from the muffler back.

Is he a mechanic or a Senior Infiniti technician? Big difference.

Depending on the nickel content, some stainless will rust. You'll see this on boats that sit in salt water, it just doesn't rust that badly.

Go to Home Depot or any hardware store and ask for "rust converter" they'll know what you mean. You can do this yourself, buy the aersol can and run the car through a car wash that has a underbody spray and then after it dries spray the converter on the rust. Some of those products do not require a topcoat as they act as their own primer.

Good luck!
