Hey guys, this is my first post here. Looks like a nice site.Helped my cousin do brakes on his 97 Q45. Having a problem on driver side front.

Car has a knock when driving. The driver side brakes did not have the anti-rattle clips. They were gone. Also we did not use shims. Under braking load, the car stops perfect and there is zero noise.

Having a very difficult time finding new anti-rattle clips. Dealer wants $60. Was going to replace the brake pad caliper clips and see if that helped. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

Marc

Anti rattle clips{pad retaining clips} are available for the Q at most chain stores{autozone, etc} however the shim kits are not. Not sure why....

Do you have a part number? I've tried autozone, advance auto parts, and KOI. No luck at any of those places. What do you suggest?

Read my post. Don't accept cheap Chinese substitutes.

There are probably at least 250K parts. Not all make it online.

Call them with your VIN.

It sounds like you have two problems:1. Missing brake shims and anti-rattle clips2. A suspension noise ("knock") which could be a number of things but a guess would be strut mounts, tension rod, swaybar endlink.

good luck, junkyard would be a great source for the clips.

I found some for 7 bucks at a local auto parts store. Carlson Brake Parts makes the kit. Part number P691 if you guys are interested. Comes with pad clips and anti rattle cliips.

No noise on the brakes, but have a new problem. The lug nuts are slowing backing off after driving a few miles. I'm a little lost here...are the threads stripped?

Car has 175xxx miles, it is a 97. We used an air impact and then checked to make sure they were tight with lug wrench...

Impact wrench, if not set properly, can strip your lug nut/bolt and even warp the rotor. Torque spec for the lug nut is 72-87 ft-lbs.

Perhaps more immediately troublesome, it makes the lugs difficult to remove without an impact wrench, too. I get tired of asking grease monkeys at tire shops not to use impact wrenches on my cars. Last thing I need is to get stranded on the side of the highway with a flat tire I can't change because some kid couldn't be bothered to hand-torque my lugs.
