Vehicle: 1997 Nissan pickup 4-cylinder 2WD

Problem:With a fully charged battery, the vehicle will start and drive. With continued driving the vehicle will stall. The battery is drained enough to not turn over. If jump started, it cannot be driven for a long distance without stalling.

Actions:Alternator. The alternator was removed and rebuilt. After installation, the problem persisted. The alternator was removed, rechecked (tested OK) and reinstalled. The problem still persists.

Battery. The battery is fresh, voltage and load checks are OK and will hold a full charge.

Hunches. The alternator is generating power but it is being prevented from charging the battery. The vehicle is running off the battery and once the battery is drained and the voltage drops, the engine electronics are shutting down and the vehicle stalls.

Question. Assuming this hunch is correct, what components should be checked and where are they located.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

do a continuity test on the fuse links at the positive battery cable, also check the main fuses. There are 2 wires in the connector on the altenator. Use a volt meter and test for power with the key on at those 2 wires. you chould see power on the larger of the 2 wires. If not you have an open fuse somewhere.

just a note: To properly test the charging system it should be done while the altenator is installed and the car running
