1997 Pathfinder - neutral safety switch?

"Occasionally" this Pathfinder will not engage the starter in start position, when this happens, I hold the key in the start position, step on the brake pedal, and move the shift lever to neutral and the vehicle will crank and start. I'm assuming the neutral safety switch is bad... where would this switch be located? Under the console? or on the transmission shift linkage? i.e. underneath and outside the vehicle?
