You really can't drive the car without an MAF sensor. The car should bog and act completely funny. You'll also get a CEL probably.

Im not sure how these computers are but in my 03 bmw if you unplug the MAF the computer reverts back to its last good A/F ratio and runs the same, but throws a lgiht saying the MAF is bad. Also did the same thing on my 03 eclipse spyder when i put a turbo kit on it and took the MAF outta the equation. The direct affect will be gas mileage. A minor change probably for the worse. The secondary affect will be hp gains. Your engine will run at a constant A/F ratio instead of changing the ratio based on the intake of air. So sometimes your will run rich and sometimes lean. Instead of the constant right mixture. I think thats about it. I wouldnt disconnect it tho unless its for a turbo install or something FI.

You're gonna get very, very rough idling and you're RPM's will jump all over the place, most likely causing your car to die-out.

your car should idle really low, and not accelerate much at all!

Yep the ECU doesn't know how much air is coming into the engine and it therefore does not know how much fuel to dump in. I guess Nissan engineers decided that not a whole lot of damage could be done if the safe-mode rpm limit was 2500-3000. Especially if you were installing a turbo, you'd need a MAF or convert to a MAP based system but we're talking serious upgrades here on an altima. Not a huge market for that kind of thing. It would be a totally custom setup.

As for the BMW, I'm not sure but that system could have had both MAF and MAP sensors. I know the RB26 is like that. There's some extra calculation for load that the ECU uses inputs from both types of sensors.
