My right rear speaker is distorting somewhat at higher bass levels. I took a look at the speaker and the dust covers seem fine (no tears) and the speaker is firmly secured. Anything else that I should be checking out?

Thanks,Len:jazz:

is the sound coming directly from the speaker or is it coming from the area around it??? ... it could be a damaged speaker voice coil if it is not a rattle.

thats what happens when you put full range thru one speaker.most likely bottoming out.i had new ones that sounded worst than the original, they were rebuilt.bose dont handle to good with heavy music where there is alot of information for it to produce.heavy guitar with subs, kill them.so,i guess, turn the bass down.and the volume.there ok for a oem,but dont think you can get jiggy with it,lol

I can't run any bass through my rear speakers or they distort like crazy. I don't have the Bose HU though, it's an aftermarket Sony that puts out a higher signal than the stock HU.

I'm a little confused about the last 2 posts, since I'm basically illiterate in this area. Could you please rephrase?

Thanks,Len

Do you have an aftermarket stereo or a stock Bose CD/radio? I have a Sony in mine and I have to adjust the tone controls so there is no bass boost or it will distort through the Bose speakers.

There is a thread somewhere about checking to make sure that the dome over the voice coil (the little round thing in the middle) has not become detached. Did you check that when looking for rips?

Re-cap your system, that will help us understand if the above post(s) apply.

If you can use the fader/balance knob to isolate it as a specific speaker, that will also be helpful :D.

As for the re-cap, the car has the OEM Bose setup for the 97 J30.

Okay, can you try the balance/fade thing and see if it's 1 of the rear speakers or both?

If it's one, then it's most likely the speaker, check wiring to make sure something didn't get knocked loose.

If it's both, then my guess is it's all speakers and you just don't notice it on the fronts. This could mean it's the HU, but try this with CD, cass & radio (if available). I'd be surprised if it's the HU as the Bose or low level output and the amps are at the speaker.

I had verified that it was the right rear speaker only, by fading and balancing to it.

Only last suggestion I can make is try switching the connections (if possible) between the 2 rear speakers and see if the problem follows the speaker or the connection, make sense?

Assuming speaker - Then, it's time to decide if you want to repair it or replace them all and add an amp.

Mine are still buzzing. Less noticeable, but there after all. I'm gonna rip those puppies out and put in some Infinitys.

I have yet to pull the backing off the front of the trunk to take a look at the rear speakers. Is it possible just to replace the speakers and not the whole amp section? You mentioned Infinitys. If it is possible to just replace the speakers, which ones do you think would have the best bass response? I don't think that I'm ready yet to put in an amp, but is the Bose system set up to easily add one?

Thanks,Len

I believe that the amps for Bose speakers are attached to the speakers themselves and would need to be removed. Replacement speakers would have to be powered by an aftermarket head unit or amp. The Bose speakers are 1 ohm and most other speakers are 4 ohm. As far as speaker recommendations. It's personal preference. I would recommend listening to several different models and picking the one that sounds good to you.

So what's the difference between a head unit and amp? What I hear you saying is that the head unit/amp only powers 1 ohm speakers and as far as I know, there are no 1 ohm speakers around. Do you know if there's an external amp output on the cd/casette/tuner?

I took off the covers to the rear speakers on the back deck and pushed down on the speakers. The good one was springy and made no noise, the bad one made a squeaking sound around 1/4 of the perimeter. So for the hell of it, I ran a bead of silicone glue around that section ---- no more distortion!
