My Infiniti Q45 was losing power (could not accelerate at times) and the check engine light was on, so I brought it into my local mechanic who diagnosed the problem as a bad mass air flow meter (no output). The part is extremely expensive ($488). Since I didn't do the computer diangosis myself, I want to make sure that they are replacing the correct part. Could the problem actually be something else (such as a dirty PCV valve), or is it pretty clear that this type of problem arises from a faulty air flow meter? Thanks!

Most likely it is a bad connection between the MAF and the harness that connects to it. Very common problem, far more common that MAFs going bad. Contacts need to be cleaned up.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I don't have a repair manual. Is this connection and the Mass Air Flow Meter easy to find?

Also, I've been looking for a repair guide for my 97 Q45 on-line and have been unable to find one. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks again,

Tom

http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/infiniti/ for a one day subscription.

Get all TSB also (there are a ton) and the owner's manual is free if you don't have one.

The MAF is bolted to the box that holds your air filter.

The connection is very easy to see. Just follow the the air tube that runs from your engine to the airbox. The tube connects to the MAF. You'll see a greyish weather pack wire connection there.
