1997 Nissan 2.4 XE automatic- stock
New plugs, cap, and rotor, and motor mounts.
When cold it stumbles badly, and twice in the last week while cold and taking off from a stop, at 3000 RPM it acted like it was bouncing off a rev limiter.
When fully warmed up, there is a slight hesitation when taking off from a stop unless you hit the gas a little harder.

Warm and in drive it idles at about 600 RPM. In Park about 800 rpm
Cold idle in park is approx. 1100 rpm (I think)
Cold idle in drive is about 800-900 rpm
Idle is not what I would call rough.

I have found no vacuum leaks (yet) and oil and transmission fluid levels are where they should be.
Any ideas what it could be? As I don't plan to keep it, I didn't want to just throw new sensors etc. at it.

Ok, have decided to keep the truck. Will try a series of fixes and post the results here.
I have noticed that even in park it has a hesitation when I hit the accelerator.
I have some collapsed lifters from what I can tell and will be working on that, but first cleaning the IACV and throttle body.

Did you check for engine codes?? Add some marvel mystery oil to the crankcase, works excellent for lifter issues. Lot of could be that might be happening.

I have not checked for codes, but wouldn't the cel light be on?
Already have the MM oil and will do just that when I change the oil :yesnod . I am also buying new rocker arms over time.
This truck needs some TLC and as I like tinkering, it will get it. Thanks for the response.

It's possible to have codes stored in the memory without the check engine light on. I have a code stored in the memory been like that for a couple years. I reset the check engine so the light stays off but the code is still shows when I check for codes. When reading your original post something caught my attention. - replaced the motor mounts - Might be possible when the engine was raised that a wire or a vacuum line was disconnected. Question is did this issue occur before or after the mount replacement?

Did not know that, thanks. Time to break out my scanner.
Wish I could say when the hesitation problem started. I had not driven the truck before I replaced the motor mounts. While I didn't check too closely, I have not noticed any vacuum leaks, but I'll double check..
Appreciate your help.

You might try a vacuum gauge. The gauge will save time.

Well, no codes and no obvious vacuum leaks. The problem may be solved though. I pulled the MAF and it needed cleaning. Used some MAF cleaner and the hesitation seems to be gone. I will know for certain tomorrow morning as it was worst in the morning. It would make sense that being coated with oil would create the problem.
There are more parts I plan to replace. This thing has more original engine parts than I care for on a vehicle from 1997.
Thanks for the help. :bigthumb:
