I took my 1996 Pathfinder in this morning to get it smog checked. It failed because it was putting out to much NOX and because they couldn't perform all the tests. Last night I got a code for a shift solenoid malfunction so I reset the code knowing it wouldn't pass with a check engine light. (This has been an intermittent problem.) Anyway, I think the NOX problem is due to the timing being out of spec and its being fixed. However, I need to know how many cycles it need to go through before I should take it back for a re-test. Hopefully, the shift solenoid problem won't before I can re-cycle the ECU.

TIA

you gotta drive it for about 50-100 miles of normal driving with some freeway driving about 60 mph.

yup its about 50 miles to go through all the diagnostics

thats the only way was the engine hot or cool when you ran the test? in our trucks its important to do smog check on a hot engine otherwise you'll most likely fail each time if the catalytic converter had time to cool down... sometimes if a smog shop is busy, the car will chill out front, and cool off before they test it and they don't bother to take it on a short drive before testing it. with some brands of cars its ok but i notice mine always fails when cool but passes when hot

I've now got about 75 to 100 miles on the Pathfinder since resetting the code with my code reader. However, on Sunday it threw a pending code for the shift solenoid valve B. (CEL didn't come on yet.) When I read the code (and the instruction book again for my OBDII code reader) I found out that the code reader can tell me if the ECU has completely cycled. When I check this, the code reader told me that two tests in the ECU haven't cycled. Anyway, my mechanic has fixed the NOX problem or so he says. Turns out the timing was off probably from when I changed the timing belt towards the end of last year. I still can't get it smogged because all checks in the ECU haven't cycled.
