Hey Guys,

I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima. I recently put a good bit of work into it and I am still having trouble, but first here is a list of parts I have changed.

-Camshaft Sensor
-Starter
-Spark Plugs
-Valve Covers
-Intake Manifold Cover
-PCV Valve
-Oil Change
-ALL 6 Ignition Coils
-Fuel Filter

So, the problem I am having is this.

-Rough Idle
-Stalling
-Low Idle while in Park
-Strong smell of Gas in the car
-poor acceleration and deceleration

While I am going 65 miles an hour my car will hunker down and my speed drops, then if I put my foot slightly down on the gas to downshift, I smell gas. :bs:

While going 40 miles an hour, if I take off the gas my RPM's will drop down to 200, and once I am below 20 miles per hour, it will shut off. Now, somedays this is hit or miss. It is the absolute worse when it is hot outside. PLEASE HELP! thanks!

-Barry

You have replaced several parts but no mention of the MAF and O2 sensors. What is the fuel pressure when engine is running and when it's not (Ignition ON, pump will run for @ 5 seconds and then shutdown)? Have you checked the Idle Air Control Valve? Any diagnostic trouble code will help.

Low cost items to try. If you have never done them, you probably need to
anyway.

1) Clean the Mass Airflow Sensor with MAF cleaner or electronic cleaner (Radio Shack)

2) Make sure the EGR valve is not sticking open or closed (use MAF cleaner)

3) Clean Idle Air Control Valve

4) Remove EGR tube from behind the plenum and clean out carbon
Have a new gasket available.

5) Use a multimeter to check your Throttle position sensor

6) Try hooking a vacuum gauge to the engine to check general condition of engine

7) Use a automotive stethoscope and see if the fuel injectors are "clicking"
You can't get to all of them to check them with the multimeter due to the
air plenum.
