Hello, I am a noob to this forum but deffinately not to Nissan's and the SR20DET.

I am having a problem with my SR20DET redtop, and I need some advice / help.

I have no spark at the spark plugs. I will list the items that I have already checked. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as everyone else that I have asked, including Enjuku and Heavythrottle are stumped.

I have I have tested the coild packs, they all measure right around 1 Ohm which is right on according to the FSM.

I have also checked the ground and 12v to the coil packs - all good

I have checked the ECU for trouble codes, I get 55 (all clear)

I have checked to see if I am getting all my starter signals from the key switch to the ECU and starter.

I do have fuel pressure

the injectors are working

my MAF is reading the correct voltages

The CAS is working correctly according to the FSM

I have tested all relays and wiring, no problems.

I DID have 3 blown fuses ( elec. ign - Radio - and one other cant remember)

I replaced all fuses. everything else in the car works appropriately, and the car cranks, but as everyone knows, no spark = no startWhat the hell is my problem. any advice would be helpful. I have tried to test the ignitor chip, with no successful reults. The ignitor chip does not smell burnt, and is not disfigured as is common with similar elec. parts that melt and fail, so I am not sure if this is the problem, but I will get another one and check it out. The inside of the ECU looks perfect, with no signs of damage or corrosion.

So someone - PLEASE HELP - I want to drive my car !!!

Thanks in advance for any help !

if you've checked the cas and the coil packs, the problem's gotta be at your chip. search for the how to check for good/bad ignitors and post back.

I checked the ignitor according to the FSM 3 days ago, and it measured fine. Now i just went out and checked it again, and now it looks like it is bad. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find anyone else in the area with the SR20DET motor on order to try swaping out parts, but I will see what I can come up with and post back to let everyone know.

Thanks...

sucks man. if you're lookin for a new ignitor, you can grab the ignitor chips off the suzuki sidekick. there's the part number for you in the sr parts listing.

ok, ok, ok...I finally got a code off of the ecu ..... code 21

I have checked the ignitor chip. It is fine. so here is where i am at.

I have checked the following, all using the FSM

coil packsignitorCASfuel pressurespark plugsall wiring from ecu to coil packsall wiring from ecu to CASall wiring to MAF and other componentspower and ground to everything including all relays, etc.

Everything tests good according to the FSM

I am left to believe that I am need of a new ECU.

anyone else care to comment on this, before I dump any more money on this damn car...

Thanks in advance...

There are only a few things that are in the ignition system of an sr...

ecu, ignitor, cas, coil packs, and spark plugs.

What procedure did you use to test the cas? If you're sparking on at least one plug, it's probably the ignitor, but if none are sparking, it's probably the cas from my own experiences.

I tested the CAS using the FSM. According to the FSM, the CAS has 4 terminals, power, ground, 1 degree signal that measures from 5 to .1 volts when turned by hand, and a 180 degree signal that measures from 5 to .1 volts. I was able to remove the CAS and test for these voltages. I was also able to hear the fuel injectors fire when the CAS was turned by hand.

My only other thought was that the ECU is damaged, since none of the spark plugs are getting spark.

Now that I have been able to finally get a code from the ECU (code 21) i followed the instructions for fixing the code 21 problem, according to the FSM. Although from what I understand of the code 21, it is a lack of ignition signal. I am assuming that the lack of signal means that the ECU is working, but does not know when to fire the igniton system, because the CAS is not sending the signal to the ECM ?. I am so incredibly pissed off with this problem.

You're on the right path man. Although if the cas is working, you've tested the ignitor, I'd suspect the ECU next. It's highly improbable that all 4 coil packs have kicked the bucket on you and I'm more inclined to point the finger at the ecu if you've tested the cas and ignitor ok.

well, i switched out the ECU last night with a friends. Car still wouldn't start. Now, I cannot get the ECM to throw out any codes, even after cranking the car over about 30 times. Man, this is driving me crazy. I guess I am goinf to get ahold of 4 new coil packs and give that a shot. I know that it is very unlikely that all 4 went bad, but I am almost out of ideas.....

Has the motor ever run since you installed the SR20? What ECU are you using, the KA or the SR?

The Redtop SR20DET motor has been in this 1996 S14 for almost 8 months now. It has been running PERFECTLY the entire time. The harness was done by a wiring service, and is perfect. I am running the #62 redtop ECU in the car.
