I have a 96 auto maxima with 150k miles that is giving me a very hard time starting. The starter was going out and so I had it replaced last week. The car will crank and crank but it will not start everytime. The battery and alternator test fine. When it does start, it's intermittant. Whether the car is hot or cold makes no difference. The fuel filter has been replaced recently and I have a diagnosis from a mechanic (that I do not trust). The mechanic says the car needs a new flywheel and wants $500 to do the job. I don't believe him and am wondering if anyone can give me some insight here.

Make sure your battery connections are clean and tight. I know you checked the battery and alternator but a good battery should read 12.5VDC or more with engine OFF while the alternator charging voltage should be 14.1-14.7VDC.

It's usually the starter pinion gear that gives before the flywheel. Do you have a brand new or refurbished starter. Some rebuilt starters may not have been serviced properly (dirty gear and motor assembly). You can pull out the starter and check the condition of the flywheel and the starter itself.

When you replaced the fuel filter, did you check the fuel pressure? With engine running, should be 34 PSI (43 PSI if vacuum is disconnected or if Ignition switch is ON with engine not running).

Get a free scan from Autozone as you may have fault codes.
