1996 Maxima replacing Left halfaxle - circlip will not seat properly

I am in the middle of replacing the the Left transaxle (already replaced the right with no problem) and the shaft stops about 1/4" to 3/8" short of the seal. The circlip will not engage and I can pull the shaft back out. Any suggestions?

Ignore my request on replacing Left halfaxle. Purchasing department got the wrong shaft (ABS shaft on non-abs car).

I would get a new c clip for the shaft
