I have 240k miles on my Maxima..has been great so far. I am getting a p400 code indicating egr flow problem. I want to check the valve and see if there is a clog, test it, etc. but cannot locate it. The diagram in the Haynes tech book is too vague. I recently changed the air filter and the plugs, but the egr code was showing up before that. Also, there is a knock sensor code coming up, too, but a tech at the dealership told me to check the egr valve first. if anyone knows of a link to a picture or diagram, please let me know. Thanks

I appreciate your reply. I spent about an hour looking at the various links and resources...didn't find anything specifically for the Maxima. Did I miss something I should have seen? I would love to get a copy of one of the tech manuals for the Maxima like the ones for the Sylvia and 240's. Again, I appreciate the reply. Thanks, K.

Sorry about that. try this link:

For some reason they only make the manual available on a revolving basis. if it says temp down , you have to wait for it come up. It happened to be available when i was there. its the 1998 maxima, 4th generation, VQ30DE

The emissions stuff is in section EC page 260 approx. NG equals no good. if you dont have the reader , you do what is says where it has the pic of reader crossed out.

Wow! Thank you...the pics are awesome. I will check the site from time to time to see when the 98 Maxima FSM is available. I grabbed the 02 version b/c I suspect there will be a lot of engine related stuff I can use in the mean time. The pics you included made it easy to recognize the EGR valve. It appears it could be tough to work on with the throttle assembly installed. Also, I had difficulty seeing an electrical connector going to or from the valve itself, although the Haynes manual has procedures for testing the resistance across the electrical connx (step motor?). Anyway, your reply was most helpful. Thanks again!

The one for the 02 is going to be pretty different motor-wise and electronically. The 96 is ODBI and has a 3.0L, and the 02 is OBDII and has a 3.5L. When I get off work, I'll shoot you an email.
