Check out http://www.kbb.com. Sounds like the base I30. I think there was a touring edition in 96 that added a better suspension, but I'm not sure. The I30 was basically a fully loaded Maxima so the extras were thin... probably limited to touring edition, CD changer, etc.

The I30s are rock solid and it's based on a Maxima that was already in it's second year of production. The Maxima and I30 has had the same basic format since 1985, with revisions in 1989, 1995, 2000, and 2004 model years. They have a very good track record!

The price (based on kbb values) is somewhere slightly above trade-in ($5100) and well below private party ($6870) - assuming excellent condition. I would insist on seeing service records which are available at any dealership through the warrany period at least (just need the VIN). You also want to make sure it hasn't been in an accident. Any paint work, and it's worth far less than the numbers above. Depending on your location, you should be able to find one in excellent condition fairly easily, so I wouldn't take less unless it's at a deep discount and you can pay to get it back in tip-top shape.

Maintenance history, of which you have provided none, would have a large impact on this deal.

What did the Infiniti senior technician say after he inspected it?

its an awesome car, you'll definitely be getting your money's worth if its clean and has a good history. The only thing you may not like is the taillights on the 96. I think they're the ones that are oranged out, but that is a quick DIY to fix and clear out to look nice.

The 1996 model wat the intro model t othe I30, and was introduced in 1995. There were not many things you could add, at the time, other than the touring package, wit hthe manual transmission. I looked at one in August, 1995, and decided to get the 1995 Maxima. Infiniti was selling them for about $43,000.00, which at that time, had the luxury tax. The dealership refused to even look at my 1992 Maxima as a trade, and the guy actually laughed at me, when I asked him what his best price was. He also got real pissy, when I pushed the car a little bit, to see if it was much faster than my Maxima, which it wasn't.

We bought the Maxima for $23,000.00, and didn't loose our shirt when we sold it in 2000, for $10,500 with 120,000 miles on the ODO. (Sorry, got off track for a second)

Not much difference in the 1996 up to 1999, except for subtle cosmetic changes. If the leather is good, and there is a clean history, it sounds like a good deal.
