So how is the alternator testing under load?

You may be on the way to killing your new (meets OEM specification?) battery.

Can you explain how to test an alternator on a car that won't start?

Sounds like the charger pushed too much current-possibly blowing a fuse/relay. I'm sorry I can't offer more other than whatever the fix is it will be very simple-as soon as you discover it.

Well, if one does not test it when the battery charging problem first appears, one has to bench test it. Highlights the importance of testing a whole system, even if only one part has apparently failed.

Hope this helps! Keep reading and you'll learn much more.

well,.. the whole story is.....

I bought the car from a mechanic & had it towed home.I've been saving for new tires & having the title work done.Got everything back & decided to start it up AGAIN ....Battery was dead (It ran before...when I got it).

I think that the security system has shut off the spark??

I'll check it tonight.

I was looking for a way to reset the system?

No key fob!

Thanx,Big Bob

What do you mean "bench test it"? Also how does the alternator effect a start/no start condition?

Last night I checked all of the fuses & relays.......Reset ECU.

Tried to crank it again & will turn over just won't start!

Finally disconnected both battery cables & left it that way.

I'll check for spark tonight.

BTW...I can hear the fuel pump running & I did put gas in it.

Thanx,Big Bob

I think a phone call to the local dealer is in order. I think you're right that it is related the security system. There's likely some alternate way to reset the security system.

Thanx, Bullitandy

That's what I think...I work as a robotics tech & know computers pretty well.

When I called my local dealer I talked to some girl that told me bring it into the shop.....yeah right....I'm not rich!!

I asked her for the info to reset it myself & she said bring it in they will reset the computer.

$100 bucks just to look @ it.

I was hoping that someone on here might know the procedure or have access to a FSM?

Thanx again, Big Bob

Hey, I've got the same problem with a 91 240. It's got no security system, but my 95 240 has stock alarm. If it was a problem with the alarm, I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't even try to turn over. When you set off the 240 alarm, it won't do anything, as opposed to "cranks but won't start".

As far as going to the dealership, don't do it. You can find all the info to reset or read your ECU, as well as a list of codes, somewhere on this site. It's so easy that I install mine backwards (they're under the passenger kick panel in 240s) so that I can check them from the drivers seat if the check engine light comes on. All you need is a flathead screwdriver.
