Hey, I've got the same problem with a 91 240. It's got no security system, but my 95 240 has stock alarm. If it was a problem with the alarm, I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't even try to turn over. When you set off the 240 alarm, it won't do anything, as opposed to "cranks but won't start".
As far as going to the dealership, don't do it. You can find all the info to reset or read your ECU, as well as a list of codes, somewhere on this site. It's so easy that I install mine backwards (they're under the passenger kick panel in 240s) so that I can check them from the drivers seat if the check engine light comes on. All you need is a flathead screwdriver.
