My check engine light came on so I hooked up the code scanner which revealed a speed sensor error. I replaced the speed sensor, cleared the error, but the check engine light came back on. Same error. One odd thing. The tack works sometimes and not at others, but there is no noticable performance change. What is the next suggested step?

does the speedo gauge work?when the tach stops working, does all of the other gauges stop working too?there needs to be more information for a more accurate diagnosis.the system works like this. the speedo sends a alternating signal to the speedo gauge, the speedo gauge converts that into a voltage signal and sends that to to ecu, a/t ecu, and everything else that may need to know how fast the car is going such as the airbag system, cruise control, ect....

since you replaced the speedo unit, the problem is either the sensor isn't sending the signal to the speedo gauge causing the gauge not to work and therefore not sending the signal anywhere else or the gauge is getting a signal but not sending it to the ecu.

now with that knowlege, breakout a wiring diagram and a DVOM and get to testing some wires.

I'm having the same problem with my 96SE. Speed sensor doesn't appear to be working. How hard is it to change it? Where is it located? Thanks.

Thanks. I'll working on getting it out tomorrow. I imagine it can't be too difficult to remove.
