Ok. I am having some serious issues with my 5 speed transmission and i am about ready to drive it into a river..... it is sticking in 5th and in 5th only. It shifts into and out of all other gears fine, it will go into 5th fine but will not come out if the car is moving. It has a new pilot bushing and clutch. new slave cylinder and master cylinder. I was running 75/90 gear oil for about a month and a half when it started..Syncros maybe? i have had a few people tell me that i should have put 30 weight motor oil in it because 75/90 was to thick. i just put the 30 weight motor oil in it and it did not help any. I figure that it smoked my syncros.. any help??????

Well, atleast you made sure you ruined it...with the 30w.75/90 is the right weight. You sure you used the right 75/90?

lol at putting in 30wt motor oil. im guessing new transmission time!

as for the oil 75 90 is right. i believe if you use the wrong one that is not specified for brass it toasts the syncros

Yeah, the wrong oil will eat any yellow metals.

Ok, then from what it sounds like, you blew the synchro's out for fifth gear, then you added 30wt oil and really toasted it. Get a new transmission and install. Not really any need for any further discussion. Unless you need to know how to r&r said part. Then you need to search.

Technically 30W is or "was" the equivelant to todays 75/90W.

For future reference there are only a handful of yellow metal safe gear oils.

I dont know that to be true and unless 30w oil got thinner over the years, 75/90w is much thicker oil than a 30w. I have the two right here in front of me and they arent even close to being the same weight oils. And yes I know what oil weight means, so dont think I am sitting here literally weighing the two.

75/90W is used in leu of 30W because that's what was called for WAY back in the day. 30W breaks down alot quicker though.

Yes, Only Thing You Would Need To Do Drill A Hole For The Crank Angle Sensor(Or Something Like That).

You Don't Need It, But Most People Just Don't Like Having The Check Engine Light On.

^Info Came From A Buddy That's Done A LOT Of 5-Speed Swaps, When I Asked Him Since I'm Gathering Parts And Info For My 5-Speed Swap.

This Is Because Some (If Not All) 96+ S14 Are OBII, And All Under Are OBI.

ehh... sort of. OBD II came around mid 95, some 95's have them some don't.

I have a 95 that was manufactured in April of 94 but yet is still has an OBD consult port under the passenger side of the dash so to this day I still don't know which one I have...lol
