My engine is in pieces after milling for a blown head gasket. I got it dirt cheap to use as a replacement in hopes that repairs would be easy.

I have one concern: when i turn it over by hand there is a little resistance in part of the revolution. It turns smoothly, then in a small portion it binds just slightly. Any ideas on what the culprit could be and any possible solutions?

are your plugs in? if so you will have commpresion build up 2 times per revolution of the crank. Another thing that will cause a bind is your cam lobes, hardly noticable but never the less it takes a slight effort to ramp up on the lobe.

Actually, the oil pan and head are both removed. Sorry I didn't clarify that. I seem to be leaning towards cylinder wall problems. Would honing be a good idea?

Are you connected to the trans still? you might be getting some resistance from there. If not ,yea you got something going on with the crank bearings or something. It should turn very free.
