I have a 1996 200SX SE-R. I changed the battery and air filter. Now it has the check engine light on and won't go over 2000 RPM. It surges bad at about 2000 RPM. Did something come unhooked at the air intake? It ran fine before.

Check the maf sensor, its usualy a black box directly after the air filter and if its unhooked/damaged it will limit the rpms to 2 - 3k.

that sounds exactly like the mass airflow sensor. with the car on, try jiggling the wire to the MAFS around. if you dont know, its the sensor closest to the air filter in the air intake. make sure you didnt forget to hook it back up.
