ok so my 240 (KA24DE) was making a clanky noise. i was thinking i might have busted a lifter or something. i take off my cylinder head cover to find that my upper timing chain top guard had snapped completely off and was bounceing around on my timing chain! thankfully i checked the noise right away because it could have really screwed up alot of expeniseve parts. so i look everywhere for this piece and nobody has it. I finally just go to the dealer and am getting ready to get raped for this little part when they say that the part has been abolished because it kept breaking for no reason. nissan said i can just put the cyclinder head back on without this cover.

my question - Has this ever happened to anyone? Im kind of worried to put it back together without it because my timing chain wont be getting as much oil dripped back down onto it without that cover blocking the oil from spitting everywhere. any comments would be appreciated!

Hey guys im really new to imports, but I just bought an S-14 and I love it. The reason im posting on this is im having the same problem I believe but my car has 70,000 original miles on it where it way babied but Im having that same noise in my car. Is this something I really have to tear the motor apart right away or what should I do. And how do i know if the part has snapped apart or if it is just getting smacked into by the chain? is it just that it is noisy or? Any help you could give me would be really appreciated thanks.

this is a VERY common problem, jst do a search on nico especially in the archived section. there is a ton of info from people that had the same problem.

Hey thanks I will do that, just one last thing though. In your opinion would you run it for a while or rip it down right away? I mean is it alot of noise and not a big deal or? You deff dont have to answer that but id appreciate it.

By the way the other guy is deffinatly right that front end is hot. It just has awsome lines and the headlights really look good.

By the way I have already looked up:

- Fix Your Timing Chain Rattle- Replace Timing Chain- Replace Timing Chain (KA24E) On 240sx.com

Before you mentioned that but I just dont know if its something thats annoying or its something that will bring about the apocplypse for my baby. If it had a bowtie on it Id fix it in about an hour. Man Im learning but I still dont know much about these cars any point in the right direction would help. Thanks again.

scroll up an hit search, type in timing chain. if u dont find any info u need go back and select archived section and u will get results from long time ago.

my car also rattles pretty loud but i'm not touching it because i'm waiting on my sr. just read up on what other people have done to quiet it down.

also if u know how to work on a car, jst replace the timing chain and all the components. just search for FSM to get urself a copy.

Its not hard to do at all. I just took off the cyclinder head cover, unscrewed the 2bolts holding on the top guide, sprayed some wd40 on my tensioner and pushed it back in forth to get it working properly again, and then put the cover back on. i only took off the top guide because it was the only one hitting. now my engine purrs like a cat, no knocking what so ever.

(just make sure you take the cylinder head cover bolts off in the correct pattern, clean the gasket and engine, use grey gasket sealer, and put them on in the right pattern. that way you dont have any leaks)

Thanks man, I think im going to take the valve cover off and remove the chain guard and try to get at that tensioner and if that doesent quiet it down I think Ill take it down to a friend of mine to take out the other chain guard and look at the lower tensioner. Thanks alot for the help im feeling much better about taking care of that now.
