I'm trying to replace the alternator idler pulley on a 1995 q45 and have run into some problems. I assume the long bolt is to loosen the belt, but either way I turn it does nothing. I can get it to back out some, but it gets to a point where it won't move without excessive force and I'm afraid I'll break it off. I'm not sure what to do next.

Try tapping on the pulley. Sometimes the tensioner gets jammed up. If the bolt is turning that means its turning inside the adjuster but you get to a certain point and it jams up. I bet by tapping on it you loosen it up and you can adjust the rest of the way.

You really should do all the idler pulley (bearings) at the same time. When the one goes the rest aren't far behind.

For the FGY33 2000
(removal)First You have to loosen! (not off) the bolt in the center that holds the pulley on then, then loosen the bolt that pushes the pulley into the belt that creates the tension.
(install in same way) put center in first almost tight then use tension-er bolt then finally tightne down center botl at end, I use a little grease on threads and guide.
If you plan on replacing the bearings be prepared to put some extreme pressure on it with a large vice or take it somewhere I was amazed at the pressure I had to put on the Power Steering idler pulley bearing.
