Desperately need help with my engine overheating. It all started with my water pump leaking. So i replaced it. It still overheated. I was told that it could be my radiator. So i replaced it. Still overheated. Then someone said that the only thing left was the thermostat. Replaced it. Still overheating. Someone said that there could be air trapped in the system. Anybody know anything about this and how to fix the problem??? My car has been out off the road for a week and I need it back. thanks for the help.

Are you sure you go all the air out. With all the parts you replaced it seems likely that air entered the system in multiple places.

I tried that and it still doesn't overheats. I'll drive it until it gets hot and then the overflow resevoir will be full all the way to the cap. But the engine is still not hot. I can put my hand on it and I got a laser thermometer and it's around 100 degrees. The hottest thing under the hood is the radiator hose which was at 200. Could this be a blown head gasket??? And does anyone know how expensive this is to fix??? Thanks for all your help.

Thermo's probably stuck open if your engine isn't heating up at all.

Simple have the system pressure tested then test the radiator air head space for hydrocarbons leakage [special tester with color fluid].

Lots a specialized tools need to do everything perfectly:http://www.hubitools.be/produc...tid=8

AB70586 // Combustion Leak Test Kit Checks radiator to see if combustion gas is present - test fluid changes colour if leak is detected.Quickly identifies cracked or warped blocks and heads, or leaky gaskets.

It sounds like from your initial post that the car overheated as a result of the water pump leak. You are right that this may have damaged the head and created a leak from the engine into the cooling system. It sounds like you need the leak-down test. For grins, try removing the thermostat and driving the car. This will eliminate is as a possible source of the problem and provide max cooling flow to the radiator. Bad thermostats are not uncommon (stuck closed). Good luck.

Alright here we go again. More problems.... After taking it to another garage. Luckily this one felt sorry for me and just charged me 20$. They tested the thermostat and everything. They said the only thing they even think it could be would be that i got a bad water pump from autozone. But here's another thing new. When i left the garage my car is revving up to like 7 or 8000 before it decides to shift. And when it does it shifts HARD. It's an automatic and it's never done this before. Also the engine light is on. It's never came on before. Is my engine and transmission done for???? HELP???? And how much does it cost to do the SR20 swap??? Thanks.

I'm having the same problem! i replaced the motor thought i bleed all the air out of the cooling system, drove it around the block. the trans revs high at light throttle then shifts hard. get on it hard and trans shifts fine, the check engine light comes on. i pulled the code 55

Time to pull for codes. The transmission not shifting before it hits 7k is defintely bad news. I'll have a look around as to what could cause that.

97nas14, don't jack the thread.

Hey Jmax...

Just trying to get some clarification here. In your initial post you say the engine is "overheating", and then later you say it's not getting hot at all. Is this correct - have the symptoms changed?

Overheating and not heating up would be caused by different thing. I can see a bad water pump (as stated in your last post) causing overheating, not a lack of heat. Lack of heating usually comes from the thermostat being stuck open, allowing the coolant to flow all the time, not allowing the engine to reach a good operating temperature.

So, depending what's happening - overheating or not heating, the cause will be different.

A leakdown test should tell you if your head gaskets are leaking.

Also, as for the high revs and erratic shifting, I know my Pathfinder did something similar when the coolant level dropped at one point. The engine is equipped with a "coolant level sensor" which effects engine performance. When the level drops, the engine can do some weird things. Once the coolant is refilled, it can take a while for the ECM to "relearn" the engine's performance. I know the first time I heard this, I was a little sceptical, but it seemed to be right on for mine. So, maybe this is all related to your coolant issue...

Just some thoughts - keep us informed.
