1995 nissan 240sx issues

ok first thing that i did wrong was i washed the engine. then my car began to run like s*** and i realized the 1980's spark plug wires i had on the car had let water into the spark plugs. so after i buy brand new wires and spark plugs and dry everything out my check engine light will not go off. I have been looking at code readers for the car but all seem to be for a 1996 and newer. Does anyone know what kind i need and if this will turn the light off? Also, i dont think it could be like head gasket issues or anything else because i replaced the engine less thank 15k miles ago. Thanks for all your guys help.

check the dizzy and the cap and rotor. next time cover the important items with baggs before washing the engine
