Hi I am a newbie here. I have a 1995 Maxima with 110k miles. It's in need of an engine. I am thinking about a $800 used engine I found from everdrive.com. Has anyone used them??? I have found a shop that is willing to put in for $1500. I am also thing about working with a friend master mechanic and will to help me do this as a project car in my driveway. The car is in great shape other then the engine. Do you have any thoughts...

I have not used this company. Somebody on the forem has used this company.
I called LKQ Corp and could get a used engine and transmission for $1600 with a
3 mo? guarentee I think. This would be a crate engine and transmission not
including installation costs.

I would suggest an engine with a warranty. When I bought a JDM engine from a place near Seattle, it had a 6 month unlimited mile warranty on it. That was in 2004 and the engine is still running strong. There are many places that sell used engines that check them out (compression, leak down) and make sure they are working properly before selling them.

How did your engine conk out at 110K? That is pretty early for a Maxima engine.

I agree with Chris. It's too early for a Maxima/I30 engine to die at 110K. Did you have an overheat, hydrolock or ill-timed NOS injection? You must get a warranty even if it's a used engine.

I would do or have an INDEPENDENT mechanic check the compression of any new engine
bought from a junkyard or dealer. I think a leakdown test would be also needed-its more
comprehensive. You might check to see if the warranty covers installation/labor costs too.
110K on the old engine is not much unless its seen abuse. How did you verify its dead?

I am not too sure what maybe the problem with the present engine. Here is what I know the two right back cylinders are dead "no fire" I do have spark and should have fuel. I just replace all the injectors. I want to do a pressure test. I am thinking that problem may be a blown head gasket.

Are you absolutely positive you need a whole new engine? There are people who have between 200K and 400K miles on their 95 maximas with original engine. You can replace the cylinders or the ignition coils too if that is the problem-- I had a problem with backfires (sort of) due to malfunctioning ignition coils. Also, rather than buying a whole new engine, it may(most likely) be cheaper to buy a new head gasket and replace the malfunctioning parts than to get a whole new engine. If you need to buy a whole new engine for 1k or so, you are probably better off finding a used 95 Maxima from a private owner. With 110K miles on it, you should not be having to replace an engine. I have 150K on my 95 maxima (i treat it like a baby too though)
