Hi all. I have a few problems with a 1995 Maxima, I just bought for my son's first car.

I am new to Nissans. I have owend a 95 Altima for about 6 mounths and love it. My son wanted one also. So we picked up this 95 Maxima V6 Auto. 125.00 miles.

My problems are and this is the way we got it.

car idels rough, runs good once moving down the road. Tach only goes about 1300 rpm.

No odometer.

the worst, no reverse.

Check engine light is on. Have not checked that . Dont know how? The plugs I did check, frt. only, look new. Air filter was dirty Have a new one,and got a new fuel filter.

Any help? Are some of the problems related?

Thanks, Mike and Nick

welcome to NICO. i owned both of those cars when new ('cept my max was a 5-spd ).still have the U13 original owner now at 170k and ~13yrs.

let's start with the codes.on the most forward part of the console, abeam the gas pedal is an access plate 2 screws. take that off to access the ECU and read the codes.you'll see a slot screw might be under a piece of clear tape if no one has done this before.punch the tape as needed. turn key on, engine off.rotate screw CW gently until it stops. wait 2 sec, then rotate gently CCW until it stops.read codes from flashing CEL. it will be a series of 'long' flashes followed by a series of short ones.post up and we'll go from there.

47 crank pos sensor. prolly why tach only goes part way. will likely affect idle. must replace urgently.

34 knock sensor. pretty common at tis mileage. wont affect idle, will afect low-mid range torque. could be a sign of overheat if case is excessively warped. medium priority.

41 intake air temp senosr. will affect cold driveability. high priority.

After replacing the sensor's and doing some rear brake work, I started the car and tried to go for a drive to check her out better. The check light came on with a code 47 again. crank sensor. I am sure it was installed correctly.

I will go out and check the wires and the install. What else can cause this?

I also noticed today that when I put the car in reverse,it will shudder a little and some times when cold ? it will move. Have not driven it since driving it home. Any idea's.

I have a factory service manual for my Altmia, and trying to figure some of this stuff out myself, but sure could use some help.

Thanks Mike

did the driveability change after crank sensor replaced?did you reset the ecu codes (a second cycle after reading the codes, before turning key off)?

The driveabitity, about the same. Idel slightly rough, tach works backwards, give it gas and it drops, only goes to about 1200 rpm then drops. Idel about 480 cold . that's low, but I have not had it out of the grage to really test it yet. The ignition coils look original.

Yes, I cycleld the system after checking code. All the other codes are gone.

Thanks for your help, and quick replys. Please keep up the good work.

this is going to be tough to make progress over the forum.without knowing specifics, i'd guess either the 'new' sensor is defective (was it OEM from nissan?), the trigger for the sensor (rotating 'tooth' connected to the crank) is damaged or extremely dirty, or there is a break in the harness from the sensor to the ECU.

might want to breakdown and order the service manual online via one-day subscription for $20. get the one for your U13 as well (they have back to model year 95 last i checked). get all the tech bulletins while you're in there.
