Okay I got a 1995 Q45 Infiniti 157,683 miles on it Automatic Transmission. Car runs very quiet. Smooth. Then I noticed that while on the highway the car never shifted out of 2nd gear. I was up to 80 MPH and my rpm meter was almost in the red so I slowed down. I got off the highway and then drove slowly but steady increasing the speed. It shifts from 1st to 2nd gear but then I dont feel the next shift or maybe its to subtle to recognize it. Now question? Is it possibe for a car to get to 80mph in 2nd gear? Do I need a new transmission or do I need to get a transmission tune up? There isnt any sounds as of yet that I can here. Would it be my shifter linkage? I'm open for all advice even if its doom and gloom. Oh and thanks for welcoming me to the board. This is my first time here...

You can get to the 90's in second.

Ever done a mechanical fluid exchange? ATF cooler? Maintenance history, please.

I purchased this vehicle from a auction on a as is basis. Dot now the history of it. I was going to go and have a transmission tune up doen at this transmission shop for $69.95 and see what happens. Do you think that would help? Also what Q45 transmission would fit inside the 1995 model just in case I have to hope I find a wrecked q45 in my local junkyard if I need a transmission

I heard one time that the TPS can cause that. Do you ever see TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION on the display?

First, you need to get an FSM. Then you need to get the Infiniti dealer performed service form Infiniti.

Skip the "transmission tune" as for $70 it sounds llike snake oil.

You need to do a lot more reading of the previous posts here, especially all of those by Q45tech. Hopefully you have a cash kitty of about $6K to bring your as is bargain up to good operating specifications because the more you learn for what to look, the more you will find in deferred maintenance.

i would personally just go ahead and do a service, filter and fluid, maybe a flush, just in case cause you never know when the last time its been done so its always a good thing to do, its more preventative then anything, this is much cheaper then going out and getting another transmission when ur old one just needed a service aye? try the cheapest things first
