I was wondering if this sound familiar to anyone or if there are any usual transmission problems with this model.

I have a 1995 4 cylinder, 5 speed, 4x4, Nissan pickup. When taking off from first gear the truck shakes until I get going. Also all the gears are very loud except for fourth gear. The noise had been increasing as of late until the other day the noise stopped and the transmission is seeminlgy running pretty good now.

I dropped the transmission oil and found quite a bit of metal shaving and it was very low on oil.

What to do, where to go?

The countershaft bearings are failing. In 4th gear the trans shafts are locked together, any other gear they are engaged by the counter gear.

is this something that a fairly mechanically inclined person might be able to fix himself? I ahve the trans (with the bell housing and transfer case still attached to it) pulled out right now.

It does require a press .If you haven't done a M/T overhaul I think you should have someone with experience do it.

A common cause of this type of failure is oil starvation. Nissan in their infinite wisdom put the transmission fill plug too low on the case.

When you do rebuild the trans (or swap it out), you can do one of two things to get an extra quart of oil in there - either jack up the left side of the truck high, or remove the shifter and pour in from the top. I prefer the first method because I know I'm not overfilling it that way.

As for the jerky startup, your clutch sounds like it's going too. There's no better time to replace that when you have the transmission out. It's a big job though, due to having to remove the torsion bars, etc to get everything out.

When you refill, ensure you use ONLY GL4 lubricant. Don't use anything that says it's a replacement for all GL levels. It has to be straight GL4 only.

gl4 is synthetic. I am worried about using synthetic lube as it tends to slip past worn seal easier.

P.s. hpw do I get this shigter boot off (the one closest to the trans)

EDIT: nevermind. Now I realize GL4 is a fairly standard grade of lubricant.

GL4 is not all synthetic, though there are synthetic GL4 rated oils out there. Read your owners manual or consult any Nissan FSM on manual transmissions. They call for GL4 only.

When you say M/T overhaul what exactly do you mean?
