I just recently pulled my distibutor on my car and since then have put it to TDC according to the pics on the other forums and replaced the distributor with the pins aligned. For the past three days i have tried every night to go out and start my car for about two hours at a time and still haven't had any luck. I dont know if there is something that im doing wrong but no matter what i do the engine wont start. I know there is good spark, definetly fuel, and still no luck. Im pretty much at a loss as to what to do next. I dont know if there is something else that could be preventing it from starting. The other thing is each night i have gone out i have reset the engine to TDC and then realigned the distributor so i think everything should be good there. Any advice as to what i could be doing worng or what i could be missing??

could be the distributor set 180 degrees off. common mistake. set the engine to TDC and make sure the distributor rotor is pointing the right way. If in doubt, try rotating the distributor till it catches and starts while someone's trying to crank her.

Yah, i think i was doing that for the first couple of days. But i just recently tried again, making sure that the rotor is in position to fire on #1 Cylinder and still no luck. The closest i have gotten my car to start was when i was playing with the distributor while my frind was cranking it over and we would get it to where it spits and sputters and backfires a couple of times but still no luck.

I noticed the marks my dad i and made when we did my timming chain and that puts the crank to 20 BTDC and the rotor on #1 firing. I havent tried that yet because i read a lot that said to use true TDC. You think i should give that a try? Thinking about doing it tomorrow since i wont have to work.

Here's a procedure to install a distributor:First you need to find Top Dead Center (TDC) for the COMPRESSION STROKE in order to time the ignition distributor. To find TDC, remove #1 spark plug and disconnect the ignition coil wire. Have someone tap the ignition switch start position to slowly crank the motor while you put you hand or thumb over the spark plug hole. When you feel the compression, stop. Now look down at the timing pointer at the front pulley. It should be pointing to ZERO. If not, manually turn the motor by hand clockwise or counter-clockwise until it's pointing to ZERO. Now determine the #1 plug wire location on the distributor cap. Mark that location on the distributor body. Now insert the distributor into the block, meshing the gears so that the rotor ends up pointing to the mark you put on the side of the distributor body. You now are timed close to correct; you should be able to start the motor. Before starting the motor, set up a timing light so that you can set the timing to spec. Disconnect the TPS harness connector. It's located on the passenger's side of the engine just above the throttle assembly. Start engine and set timing to 20 degrees BTDC.
