1995 240SX Tachometer Problem

Just got a 1995 240SX. When the car is started the tach will go to about 3000 RPM. On acceleration it may rise to about 4000. Otherwise it will sit fairly constant between 3000 and 3300. It goes to 0 when the car is turned off. Any ideas at what to look at/how to fix?

i assume the engine is not actually running that fast? if not the problem is probably in the tach itself. you can test it by getting a fancy multimeter that does ig rpm measurements and tapping into the tach signal wire behind the cluster.
