I just got a 95 240sx Se. I was wondering if it had a lsd, vlsd, or what? Also how can I tell? Is there a stamping number somewere or what?

there are a couple of ways to find out. the first is it would have an orange tag on the diff itself that has lsd on it. another is to simply put it in neutral and jack it up and spin a rear wheel. if both rear wheels spin the same direction it is probably a vlsd. if they spin in opposite directions then it is definately not. also all factory lsd rears were vlsd. lsd simply stands for limited slip differential. the v meant viscous because they had silicone in them and used the viscosity to control the amount of slippage.

thanks man I will jack it up and check for a tag first then try the spin method. If it does have one it is probably wore out. Can they be rebuilt and if so by who?

Actually, if you want to know if you have the stock VLSD, just look under the hood. S14s that had VLSD also had ABS. Just look for a monstrous looking unit with several hard lines coming off of it on the passenger side of the intake manifold.

And, the VLSD unit can not be rebuilt. Its a sealed unit.

You could just throw it in first gear, pop the clutch and see if you have one or two tire marks on the ground...it's a lot more fun!!

That's not always accurate, though. I've had one with an open diff that sometimes, under the right conditions, left two marks.

In a straight line it is possible both wheels would have the same amount of 'traction' and leave two marks. Just turn the wheel and punch it.

Just a reminder, remember to post the year, and model in the title of the thread. Not just "dumb question"

I don't suggest the two wheel mark approach. If you can just pop the hood and look for the abs box, yeah that's sufficient. No need to put the stress of a burnout on your clutch, transmission, half shafts, and wear out your tires on something that could also land you in trouble with the po po.

well its alright now because I put a J30 dif in the other day. Yeah the one I took out was an open dif. When I jacked it up in the air tires spuns opposite ways. When I jacked up the donnor j30 they both spun the same way. So then after all said a done a nice lil burn-out was in order and what do ya know but 2 nice tire marks.
