I am changing the timing chain on my engine, and I would like to verify that I've done it right before I put everything together. There are two colored links on the chain, one blue and one grey. I matched up the blue link to the mark on the idler gear, and the grey link to the mark on the crankshaft gear. I made sure that they were still matched up after the tensioner was installed. The bird's eye view:

Upper Gear:

Lower Gear:

As long as the engine is in TDC, then you have it installed correctly.

BTW, upon installation of the top end. Do not re-install the UPPER timing chain guides for the Cams. These have been deemed not needed and can be removed with no problems or side affects.

Thanks for the reply. I was getting a bit worried that nobody was here!I will be certain to leave out the top guides - the topmost one was already "free floating" and giving me a free head/valve cover polishing when I started taking it apart. Now - to hope that the upper sprocket marks line up. Yes, the engine is in TDC (#1).
