The battery is not charging.

The alternator and battery have been replaced. It appears that the regulator is built in to the alternator, is that correct?

I used a volt meter and crossed the positive from the alternator to the negative terminal on the battery. This read 12.1 volts with the car on. With the car off it read 12.5. This indicates that the alternator isn't putting out anything, correct?

I pulled what appears to be the signal why from the alternator. With it out nothing changed. The voltage on the signal wire with the car on is 0.05. I assume this is a signal wire for the regulator, correct?

Do you guys have any suggestions? I'm kind of racking my brain on this one.

Thank you in advance.

My guess is alternator as well.

The alternator was just replaced for this exact reason. Nothing changed.

I'm thinking either that signal wire, if that's what it is, isn't telling the regulator to turn on. Is that possible?

I'm going to check the grounds and resistance now

I checked the voltage regulator plug.

One terminal is constant 12v. This is the sensing switching.

The other terminal starts at -12v. Then when the key goes to on it switches to +12v. I believe this is correct.

So that rules out that part of the system, correct.

To test the wires I took jumper cables and ran the positive straight from the post on the alternator to the battery. Then the ground directly to the negative terminal.

This didn't change anything.

I am completely stumped.

Please help

What is the brand/source of your replacement alternator? Reason I ask is that parts-store remanufactured alternators are pretty notorious for being hit-or-miss. Especially among the 3rd gen Maxima community, we've come to distrust and despise them. I know guys who have bought multiple turds in a row...bought one, took it home, didn't work, got it replaced, the replacement didn't work either. If it's a reman'd unit, take it back and try another. Might even have the store load test it before you leave with it. If you bought it somewhere that doesn't offer a lifetime warranty, take it back and go somewhere that does. I have put 6-ish (I lost count) alternators on the Max and only paid for the first thanks to the lifetime warranty. Reman alternators are too much of a gamble not to get a lifetime warranty. If you can get OEM it IS ABSOLUTELY worth the extra cost.

12.1v running means the alternator's not doing it's job. You should see ~14v with a good alternator while the engine's running.

I was thinking about that.

Autozone has a computerized load tester that they can mount the alternator up to.

Wonder what they'd say if right after you bought the alternator you ask them to test it.

I was thinking it might be a failed alternator... :-(

Can you move this to mechanic chat please. I think that would get a little more hits on this

Thank you for your response

Moved from Sentra Gen as suggested and then requested.
