I drove my car all morning with no problems no warnings etc etc. parked it for a couple of hours. Got in it to go somewhere again and there is no turn over. Checked fuses etc. Not even the starter is engaging. silence when I turn the ignition to start. Checked battery at Auto zone and it's good. Seems no signal is getting to the starter. Could it be a solenoid or something?

Replace the blue starter relay as the first step, assumming you have cleaned the battery cables.

Common for relays to fail after 9-10 years.

Qtech,

Is this a common failure issue with the 97-01 cars as well? If so, then I'll toss an extra relay in the trunk, or just change it out now.

I enjoy preemptive wrenching (at my joint, at my convenience, with cold beers, decent music, big nasty cigar, etc) much more than I despise standing outside a dead car with my di*k in my hand on the side of the road.

Thanks Q45tech.That's what I was thinking also. So on the 94Q is the starter relay in the main fuse box in the engine? What's that blue one that sits to the back of the engine on the passenger side (next to the abs relay box). Because it was at night and dark, I may have seen some spark activity in that vicinity while my son turned the ignition.

How many can even give a good accurate estimates of the number of times the starter and relay has been engaged since the car was produced?

How many miles per crank? What was the cranking duration in fractional seconds?

Many of my 318k miles were 4 hours [250 miles] between cranks [bladder limits] vs the first 100k which were normal < 30 minutes so my relay failed at 110k and the 2nd one now has ~200k.

BLUE RELAY PASS REAR.

One normally looks at cranking current waveform to JUDGE the condition of starter and engine compression.

I was reading on an old thread that the ignition could be interrupted by the factory security system to prevent unauthorized drive off. How does this work? Reason being is I gave my son the keys to my Q so he could go pick up his mon, he came back in the house and told me the car won't start. He has driven my car in the past but could he have triggered something in the security system. Curious.

No, that won't do it. OBD I cannot distinguish when offspring, authorized or not, attempt to start the car.

Get it on a lift if you can and bang on the solenoid with a hammer. If that works, the solenoid is your problem.

Starter motors seldom fail.

My old 1990 does this occasionally, which is caused a worn-out connection in the "Park" position on the transmission shifter (not sure if this is a switch, sensor, or what). Turn the key - nothing. Wiggle the shifter once - instant start. It only does this once every few weeks so I haven't been compelled to get it repaired.

Your factory service manual [shipped with each 1st gen Q] has thousands of diagrams, failure to read and study for months in advance of problems assures you will have lack of knowledge.

Passenger side rear of engine at 8 o'clock position.

Qtech, you are forgetting the newer generation grew up with digital clocks & watches! What does 8 o`clock look like on a digital display?

Pretty soon, the next generation wont understand the phrase "You sound like a broken record!"

I hear your wisdom bro. I am guilty of reading only when I have a problem. I scanned through that manual this morning, obviously in a rush, and did not see it.

Thanks for the info
