Guess that depends on whether you're more interested in winning (a.) quarter-miles, or (b.) ladies...

Take it up to Interstate 101 at mid-day on a clear day and say bye bye to the Maxima, I had my dad's 92' at 145 and was still steaming strong, wouldn't think the Max could hold it off once on the freeway....but the new MAx is strong, my friend has one and it pulls and is 3500 pounds or so.

The Max is pretty quick, especially for it's size. It benefits from 5 or 6 gears and the VQ's broad power- and torque-band.

I'm not sure what quarter mile times were for the different G50 variations, but the Max is a 14 second car stock.

I like the '04-'06 Max a lot (seem to be one of the few who does--I didn't when I first saw it but 3 years with one has changed my mind for the better). Its interior is a huge upgrade over the 4th and 5th gen interiors. Definitely rivals the Q and outdoes it in a few areas. It feels like a true luxury sport sedan again. (Not that I don't like the 4th and 5th gens--I do. But they're different cars...same as Y33s and G50s).

I have to say, though, if I had to choose between an '04-'06 Max and a '90-'96 Q45, my choice would be an easy one: I'd take the Q in a heartbeat--even with it's necessary restoration costs. The Max is still a bargain when the likes of Camrys cross well into the $30k range, but the ~$35k you'd pay on an SE Maxima would go a long way toward getting a Q into great shape.

Just over 3400 for an SE. SL might be heavier...it's also held back by the old 4 speed that should not have been carried over to the A34 chassis anyway.

A stock automatic Maxima from 2k2+ (VQ35DE) is a high 14-sec car. 6sp manuals I have seen in the mid-low 14's stock.

Not sure about the new CVT only models, but it looks like they are in the mid-high 14-sec range too.
