Today i test drove a 1996 cadillac eldorado ETC. Here is my opinion. This is in comparison to a 1994 Infiniti Q45 (a good comparison)

Overall this is a nice car, but I wasnt really impressed by how overwhelmingly nice it was. I would definitely have to get used to it, as it just doesnt feel the same as the Q... I would love to have one but I dont think that I could have one WITHOUT the Q, at least I dont think so at this point!

The car I tested was in absolutely perfect exterior condition. Looks BRAND NEW, I was on my hands and knees looking for dents and scratches, and its not there.... Interior had some leather wear, nothing out of the ordinary, the drivers side has a little wear on the lumbar panel, nothing of a big deal, and the passenger side has a small stain on the seat (maybe grandma's depends didnt hold?).

Anyway, I wasnt blown away by this car. Its definitely a looser feeling car, steering is very loose compared to the Q. I wasnt impressed with the RSS, I wasnt able to really test handling, but its no worse or better (maybe slightly if anything) than the Q, with standard suspension!

SO the drive: From a stand still, its not very powerful. I mean it goes but it doesnt light up the tires, like our GTP, which i was kinda surprised. SOunds like it could use some plugs/wires, sounds like it stumbles a little.....

MAN OH MAN I cant say enough how sweet this sounds, and how smooth the northstar is. Very impressed by that, it doesnt feel like the engine is going 5500 RPM and its UBER SMOOTH all the way to the redline. The transmission is VERY respsonsive, and shift AS SOON as you ask it to.... Very pleased with that..

I wasnt really able to get a good comfortable position driving, but I kinda gave it up. Seats are very comfy, but maybe not supportive enough. I only took about a 5 min drive and I was on the edge of the seat most of the tiem :D Ill have to go back and test it more. It seems like you sit too low in the car, and the seat was up all the way (vertically)

Rear seat room was a litlte cozy, but the seats are comfortable. I liked the rear vents, enough to keep it cool back there, i wish my Q had this

Overall, the interior feels kinda weird, I dont know waht it is, but Its hard to get comfortably situated. I had problems with the controls, the temp and the volume are exactly the same size and I was fumbling around, and the gear shift kinda gets in the way of the controls.

Another thing I like is the onboard diagnostics. Basically we have a consult right through the dash, lets you view all kinds of parameters. If only the Q had this.....

There is quite a bit more road noise than in the Q, wind noise is similar

THe sound system is very clear, but lower bass notes are kinda distorted, it may be the speaker is blown or something, however Id rate it overall as the same or slightly better than the Q....

Now, for problems I noticed

THe passenger side blew only HOT HOT HOT air, i adjusted it to full cold and turned off the 2nd zone and still teh same. The AC is ICE COLD though, keeps the cabin cold and could easily freeze you. There isnt a vent, that I noticed, to keep "mr. happy" cool like there is on the Q, but didnt feel around...

It needs new brake pads, no big deal, brakes felt very weak, but the rotors felt perfect, not warped at all.

There was also a litlte clunk when I hit it one time, and when you turn off TCS it feels VERY weak. The temp gauge is right in the middle...

So here is my overall review.... (out of 5)

Ride (Highway cruise)ETC- 4.5Q45- 4.5

Suspension feelETC- 4Q45- 4

Steering feelETC-3 (it feels too loose, but is nice on teh highway, if it were a LOT tighter at lower speeds id be happy)Q45- 4

Acceleration (stand still, WOT at 50)ETC- 3.7Q45- 4, 4

overall powertrainETC- 4 (didnt like FWD, but theres no torquesteer at all, very happy with that, doesnt feel like FWD at all)Q45- 4 (has a more solid feeling transmission but just not as responsive)

Interior layoutETC- 3 (id have to get used to itQ45- 5

ComfortETC- 4 (not as supportive but oh so soft, not good for high speed cornering)Q45-4

Sound systemEqual

Im surprised that Cadillac was able to control the torque steer, especially with a 275hp Northstar. A shame Nissan couldnt do it on the new Maxima. It drives like a$$ because you constantly fight with the steering wheel.

Now you need to go test drive a Mark 8.

I had one when I bought the Q. I wasn't a Q lover at the time and had little to no respect for it. I bought it because the wife wanted it, if it were up to me she would have gotten a Seville STS.

Anyway, having owned both of these cars, I can say that the Eldo will eat a Q's lunch in the short hauls and off the line. The ETC wezzie drove obviously needs maintenance because they should pull from a stand still (and torque steer is very evident). I never put the Q and the ETC at each others throats on the interstate, my wife is far too mature for such endeavors.

For the record, I'd take my Q over the ETC anyday of the week but the cars are in two separate leagues. I drove the Q to a family reunion last year and one of my uncles (a native of the Motor City) asked me "What is that, a Mercury?"

ITs a shame, because all the reivews by car and driver indicate that the Q is slower, and its ALL because of gears. THe engine puts out more power but is slower......

I dont know im still getting second thoughts about the whole ordeal...

DO I LIKE THE Q BETTER???

Would a Q w/ 4.08s be quicker than the ETC?

My friend had an eldo

not the etc, but the reg

275 HP

I've also raced a few etcs back in the day with my 91

My friends 275 hp eldo and my 278 hp q, were identical in performance. We raced a few times, and were dead even

The ETCS I raced pulled on the high end as well.

I think the 4.08 would make it even. I think a Q with the goodies would probably pull all over an ETC.

JWT ETC and 4.08 are the great equalizers

A GM car without the crotch vent? Blasphemy! There's nothing better than on a hot summer day and your wearing shorts, and you get that blast of cold air going up the leg. WOO HOO! Gotta love it.

So your thinking of buying that Eldo. Why do you want a FWD car for Wes? Wait a few years when you can afford one of those new RWD Seville replacements. That should be a nice car.

I drove the Eldo for about 3 years before giving it to my mom. In that time I changed the engine mounts, 2 coil packs, plugs and plug wires, starter, A/C blower motor, 2 synchros in the trans, master cylinder and something else that I have forgotten.

That was a little over 3k not including regular maintenance such as oil, filters, trans fluid, belts and tires.

I've also dropped well over 3k on the Q but in way less than 3 years.

Although this reflects more on neglect of previous owners than it does on the build quality of the cars. I will say that I was much happier dropping boodle on the Q becauase it just ages eloquently when compared to the ETC. When you fix something on the Q you feel like you climb back into a new car. Fix it on the Eldo and you think "What next!"

That being said, before I read this post I was on the phone with a guy about a 2000 Seville STS :D

1998+ STS is when caddy really stepped up to the plate.

They majorly upgraded the interior. The adaptive suspension was very nice

I took a road trip from oregon to az in an sts.. it was very very nice.. It had the top of the line bose system of it's time.. Very capable and powerfull.. Nice big sub and a ton of speakers. Very capable for OEM

Also in 2000+ they redid the northstar so it could run on crappy 87 gas... 300 hp and 87 octane is very nice.

You can get 340 hp out of those engines fairly easy..

1998+ STS is a real nice caddy.

The difference between the ELDO and the STS are night an day. When Cadillac introduced the new STS in the 98, it was their flagship. Designed to take on the best competition. Not saying it was better, but it was the nicest GM lux vehicle they had to date.

Eldo was built on a very old chasis, the STS got the new chasis. It was stiff and very nice for a FWD car. They used a ton of electronics to keep under/torque steer to a minimum.. I think they did a great job, considering.

ALso when you start the car the guages went from bottom to top and back again.. kinda neet lol

Bionic has a point. I just checked/adjusted my timing (post coming), and it does feel like new

If I had to go caddy it would be RWD, and that leaves me to the new generation, or an old fleetwood, we have a fleetwood, so it be retarted for me to get one..

I posted this exact same thing on the caddy forums and some of the guys got pissed there. They are just as passionate about their cars as we are (except with no aftermarket)..

If I were loaded it would make it so much easier, then i could have both!! :D Maybe Ill go over to my grandparents condo complex, make some "friends" and get into their will!! :)

Supreme road car..

that magnetheoretical fluid stuff really makes the caddy soak up bumps well..

In terms of a nice driving freeway lux cruiser, you won't find much nicer..
