My wife has a 1994 Q45 with 190K has been a great car. It's getting a tune up today because of rough idle. Repair center says that after the tune up is complete they will be able to tell how many or if any of the Injector Coils are bad. They want anywhere from $161.00 (cylinder 1-2) and $225.00 (2-8) to install these. Is it possible to order on line and install myself. I'm handy but not a mechanic. I have found them for $119.00 on line which would save me some money if more than one are bad.

Any ideas on the difficulty?

Also, can the MAF filter be cleaned DIY also?

Thanks!

Use only OEM new from Joe!

http://www.infitipartsusa.com

Occasionally there are some on eBAy, but be very careful to establish they are OEM new and not Python or some other 3rd party caca.

Check the under plenum hose posts in IOM. If it is anything other than 2, 7 & 8 (I thnk?), plenum has to come off.

At 190K, I bet plugs, VC gaskets, KS and harness and all hoses are due for replacement.

Welcome to NICO.

Yes Performance 32 valve all aluminum V8 cost more to maintain than 4 cylinders or even V6.

$2,000 worth of injectors is peanuts compared to the $2500 per year prorated that the Q costs to keep as new especially after 7 years old.

$2,000/15 years is only $133 per year since brand new. Hopefully the other $2366 has been spent or you will find yourself needing $5,000 or more worth of repairs.

Learn how to do it yourself unless you have no tools and are a total klutz or very inexperienced. Shop won't take the extra time to clean around the VC covers and in the valley, etc. as they are under pressure to beat the book to make a living.

Please spell Infiniti correctly in your profile (so you don't seem like a dingus) and include the MY, please.

Thanks to everyone for the information, and Maxnix, I promise to spell Infiniti correctly from now on. I'm not of the mindset to spend 5-10K on a car that has a BV of $2,500. I'm trying to get this car back on the road for as little as possible, not give a shop $125.00 per hour for the labor If I can do it myself.

What does book value have to do with it, you must use replacement value or the cost of any new vehicle according to it's class.

Or do like many here and drive them into the junkyard phase.

A broken Q is not worth $2500 a junkyard might give you $400 if you pay to tow it there.

The $2500-$3,000 is a dealer retail price. You can save 25-75% [of parts which represent HALF of the cost] on discount or used parts.

Do it yourselfers usually take 3-5 times longer to do a job but if you only charge yourself $20/hr and use that $100/hr saved to buy tools. You actually have a asset - TOOLS.

Well, here's the conundrum: You have a $50+K (in 1995 dollars) imported luxury V8 automobile. There are no further discounts for parts nor labor other than the discounted price based on deferred maintenance you paid when you bought it. These cars require a cash kitty of about $3K a year (15¢/mile) to keep running after they have been restored to as new condition.

If you decide to auger it in for the least amount of money possible, it won't be long before a major system degrades (depends on your fault tolerance) or a major system fails and you scrap it. Many of us recognize the build quality, like the low insurance payments and lock of financed debt or out of pocket major cash outlay a almost equivalent car would cost. I challenge anyone to examine today's crop of luxury sedans and find one that is as well, let alone better, built (not just more bells and whistles) and see how much it costs.

We know these cars can perform like new once restored for about 350K miles. The difference in new car prices, carrying costs and depreciation between an equal new one and a well maintained G50 buys a lot of $4 or even $5/gal. gas.

Maxnix; Thanks again for your point of view. I need to weigh whether I should continue driving a 14 year old high maint. import sedan or cut my losses and get a vehicle that is less expensive to keep on the road.

Yes, it's being replaced as we speak. The next project is to replace VC gaskets.
