My 1994 q45 dies occasionally but will start back up sometimes with a little help from the gas petal to keep it idling. It will jerk when I'm accelerating and just seems sluggish. No check engine light, I'm leaning towards the MAF but not 100%. Any ideas?

Hi,
I recently purchased a '92 Q and was experiencing similar issues(engine revved to about 2k but would not exceed. Seemed like the motor would choke and struggle when pressing the throttle) I found that it was related to the fuel delivery.

When I consulted the fuel filter beneath the hood, I found that it was clogged with what seemed to be orange colored fuel. After replacing the filter, I noticed it didn't take long to hear my fuel pump making a funny noise.

I've since removed the gas tank from the car, found there was a great amount of rust within the tank, and have had the tank cleaned of the rust as well as replaced the fuel pump.

After these few changes I've noticed my throttle response and overall driving experience with this vehicle to be better. Hope my experience helps at all.

Usually a problem with the MAF will light up the CEL so I would start by checking the fuel filter as suggested in the previous post and then try bypassing the FPCU to see if it is the problem. It's easy to do with a jumper. Take a look at my post in this thread:

Tried this out and no change. The car only does it after it's warmed up.

Fuel pump is pretty noisy, but it's been that way for awhile. Even when the car ran great.

but, have you changed out the fuel filter?
what is the measured fuel pressure at idle, and again when bopping the throttle from idle to like 2000 rpm?

Fuel filter was changed. How do I tell that?

you are asking how to tell if your fuel filter was changed?

To measure the fuel pressure, you need an inline gauge. Put it between the fuel filter output and the fuel rail inlet.

If the fuel pump is noisy, you know it's suspect so you should replace it before you move on with diagnosis. Seen too many people spend lots of dollars and time on chasing issues when it was the fuel pump all along.

That's what I'm trying to avoid. It's my daily and I would like to tackle the issue and get my car running back to normal. I've been told that the fpcu could be an issue.
